A guide to treating dehydrated skin.


I hope you are enjoying the new autumnal season, one thing you may find in this season is that your skin is dehydrated. So what I suggest to start this discussion is pouring yourself a big glass of water, while you continue to read. It’s very easy to confuse dehydrated skin with dry skin. Dehydrated skin simply means that your skin is lacking water and this can wreak havoc on the appearance and health of your skin. 

Dry skin is a skin type, rather than a condition, which doesn’t naturally create a lot of oil compared to oily skin or normal skin. It lacks lipids, and will be tougher in texture, appear dry and can be flakey. So a dry skin will require more oil and this can be applied in your skincare.

Dehydrated skin on the other hand is a skin condition which is caused by external factors and manifests itself as tightness, oiliness, appearing much less supple, it can appear rough and cause breakouts. Anyone with any skin type can experience dehydrated skin. Your skin may produce lots of oil, but if there’s no water to balance it out you will experience oily and dehydrated skin at the same time. 

Causes of dehydrated skin.

There are a whole host of different reasons your skin might be dehydrated, here are the most common:

  • Not drinking enough water
  • Stress or lack of sleep
  • Diet
  • Harsh skincare products

Side effects you will see manifest on your skin are acne as the skin starts to overcompensate and produce more oil which blocks the pores. Dullness as there will be a decrease in the amount of blood flow to your skin, causing it to look dull and pale. Another sign is fine lines, it’s often referred to as crepe, which is thin with tiny little criss cross lines on it, particularly noticeable on the forehead. Dark circles and increased sensitivity are also signs that the skin is lacking water.

What can you do about your dehydrated skin?

  • Increase your water intake, try to have 2 litres a day. Try to carry a water bottle around with you.
  • Diet can have a severe impact on whether your skin is looking glowy or dull. So cut back on the Caffeine, fried foods and reduce alcohol as these are the top offenders. Foods that are good and boost your hydration are foods like cucumber, celery, tomatoes, watermelon, and broccoli as they all have a high water content.
  • Reduce your shower temperature. This may strip the skin of natural oils and the skin will then try to compensate. 
  • Air Quality has a big effect on the skin, especially air conditioning which can aggravate the skin, if possible invest in a humidifier. 
  • Change your skin care routine to introduce ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.
  • Book in for a professional skin treatment.
